Clinical manifestations include fever, nuchal rigidity, seizures, severe headache, petechial rash, stupor, focal neurologic deficits, hydrocephalus, and coma. The organism is usually transmitted via nasopharyngeal secretions and is a leading cause of meningitis in children and young adults.
